The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsOstrich's quill follicles wrap around the corners, and the raised pattern breaks up the red.
Rouge Vif, a bright heritage red, takes high saturation on ostrich, and gold hardware warms it further. The vintage proportions give it more depth than the modern Mini II.
Collector's Insight:
Sellier construction on a vintage exotic Kelly 20 is less common than Retourne. It anticipates the look of the modern Kelly 20 Mini II while keeping the fuller proportions of the original.
Resale Insight:
On vintage ostrich, buyers check the follicles and corners for darkening and dryness and the gold hardware for plating wear.
