The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsVert d'Eau is a soft, pale aqua green, lighter and cooler than Vert Criquet, with a pastel mint quality. The matte finish on Mississippiensis alligator absorbs light across the wide, flat scale pattern, producing a chalky softness that saturated or shiny finishes cannot replicate. Gold hardware warms the cool green.

Collector's Insight:
Vert d'Eau is a discontinued pastel that Hermès produced for a limited number of seasons. Matte Mississippiensis in a pale pastel requires a hide where the scale pattern and dye saturation are perfectly even, any inconsistency is amplified on light matte surfaces. The Mini Kelly II is the chain-strap Sellier format at 20 cm, distinct from the traditional Kelly 20 Retourne with a leather shoulder strap.
Resale Insight:
Exotic Mini Kelly IIs are among the highest-demand Hermès specifications on the secondary market. Discontinued pastels in matte alligator trade above current-production colors at equivalent condition. The combination of matte finish and pale color in pristine condition indicates careful storage, as the surface shows handling marks readily.
