The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsThis example pairs a Cactus (Vibrant Green) exterior with a Bleu Atoll (Bright Turquoise) interior. Crafted from Epsom leather, a heat-pressed calfskin known for its rigidity and scratch resistance, the bag maintains the sharp, architectural lines of the Sellier construction. The "Mini II" 20cm silhouette is a scaled-down reinterpretation of the classic Kelly, designed strictly for essentials.
Accented with Palladium hardware, the cool silver tones complement the bright saturation of the Cactus green. The interior reveals the Bleu Atoll lining, a hidden detail characteristic of the Verso line. The bag includes a detachable shoulder strap, allowing for crossbody wear, though the rigid handle and small capacity prioritize aesthetic impact over volume.
Collector's Insight:
The "Verso" line offers a discreet variation on standard production bags, providing a pop of contrasting color visible only when the bag is open. Cactus is a distinct, vegetal green introduced around 2019, while Bleu Atoll is a legacy lagoon blue. Finding this specific high-contrast pairing in a Mini Kelly II;already a quota-restricted silhouette;adds a layer of rarity for the collector.
Resale Insight:
The Kelly Mini II remains one of the most steadily traded in the luxury handbag market, often trading at multiples of its retail price. Verso editions command a premium over monochromatic examples due to their limited seasonal availability and the "surprise" element of the interior color. Epsom leather is the preferred material for this size as it preserves the bag's miniature structure.
