The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsClosed, the color treatment remains discreet, with the horseshoe marking identifying the commission.
Sellier edges keep the small trapezoidal body clearly defined, while Epsom's pressed grain breaks light across the panels. Permabrass gives the clasp and handle fittings a pale, warm metallic accent against the black leather.
Collector's Insight:
This HSS Verso configuration places the contrasting color inside rather than dividing the exterior into color blocks. The interior treatment distinguishes it from both a single-color Mini II and special orders with contrasting exterior panels.
Resale Insight:
Compare the Mini II format, interior color, leather and hardware rather than grouping all black Kellys together. The unused condition and full set are relevant distinctions when assessing otherwise similar special orders.
