The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsEpsom is a pressed-grain calfskin known for its rigid structure and color saturation. It maintains its shape without softening and is highly resistant to scratching.
Sellier construction produces crisp, defined edges through external stitching. The 20cm Kelly is a scaled format that adjusts the original proportions. Interior is lined in matching Chevre leather with one zip pocket and two slip pockets. Single top handle with detachable shoulder strap.
Collector's Insight:
Horseshoe Stamp confirms this as a Special Order, made to client specification through Hermès' allocation program. HSS pieces are not available for general purchase and require an established purchase history.
Resale Insight:
HSS Special Orders trade at a premium over standard production in the resale market. The bespoke color combination and limited availability create sustained demand among collectors. Provenance documentation strengthens resale positioning.
