Hermès HAC 40 Dark Bronze Togo Palladium Hardware

The original. Haut à Courroies predates the Birkin by nearly a century, designed in the 1890s to carry saddles and riding boots, its proportions reflecting function before fashion. Taller than it is wide, with a deeper base and longer sangles that wrap the full height of the bag. The Birkin borrowed this architecture in 1984 and compressed it horizontally; the HAC retains the vertical emphasis that made it useful on horseback.

Forty centimeters in Dark Bronze Togo with Palladium hardware. Dark Bronze is a recent introduction, a dark grey that reads slightly lighter than Noir, with warmer undertones than Gris Misty's cooler blue cast. It occupies that useful space between black and grey: present enough to register as a color choice, neutral enough to function as a foundation. Togo's pebbled grain holds structure without rigidity, develops character over time, and forgives contact in a way smoother leathers cannot. Palladium hardware maintains the cool-neutral temperature. Double-rolled handles, clochette with lock and keys, saddle stitching executed by hand.

Collector's Insight:
The HAC occupies a specific position in the Hermès hierarchy: it's the ancestor, not the derivative. Collectors who choose it over the Birkin are making a deliberate statement about proportion and history. The 40cm size offers genuine capacity: weekend travel, work documents, laptop. Its taller silhouette reads differently on the body than a Birkin 40, which extends horizontally. Dark Bronze gives collectors an alternative to the Noir/Étoupe/Étain conversation, dark enough for versatility, distinct enough to register as a deliberate choice.

Resale Insight:
HACs in excellent condition maintain liquidity across global markets, particularly in sizes 40 and above where the functional capacity justifies the silhouette. Dark Bronze offers the neutrality of black without the ubiquity; collectors seeking something slightly off the expected path find it here. Growing adoption among male collectors has increased visibility for the HAC overall, but it remains less saturated than its Birkin descendant.
