The story behind the Constance

In 1967, Jean-Louis Dumas asked a designer to create a bag for Hermès; she named it after her newborn daughter, Constance. A structured shoulder bag defined by its H clasp, which opens on a spring mechanism hidden at each side of the bar and serves as both closure and signature. Produced in Mini (18 cm), standard (24 cm) and Élan (approximately 25 cm); a Micro at approximately 14 cm has appeared in limited production runs.

Hermès dates the Constance to 1967, when Jean-Louis Dumas asked a designer to create a bag; she named it after her newborn daughter, Constance. The model became closely associated with Jacqueline Kennedy's style and has remained in continuous production since. The Constance 18 is the smaller of the two current sizes, with a longer adjustable strap that allows comfortable crossbody carry alongside doubled-shoulder positioning.

Alligator Mississippiensis is the American alligator species sourced from Mississippi farms, identified by the two-dot (••) symbol adjacent to the Hermès stamp. Shiny (lisse) finish is achieved through extended agate-stone polishing after dyeing, producing the near-lacquer gloss surface that distinguishes Lisse from the velvety matte alligator reading. Noir on Shiny Alligator reads as deep saturated black with the gloss surface holding light dramatically across the scale grid. Rose Gold hardware departs from the cooler standard Palladium and warmer standard Gold registers, reading as a soft pinkish gold against the deep black ground.

Collector's Insight:
Constance 18 is the more crossbody-friendly of the two current Constance sizes, with the longer single-strap drop allowing hip-level positioning that the Constance 24 doesn't comfortably achieve. Shiny Alligator runs under more restricted allocation than calf leather Constance production. Rose Gold is among the rarer hardware finishes Hermès produces on Constance, sitting between the cool Palladium and warm Gold registers and pairing with deeper or jewel-tone leathers in the secondary market.

Resale Insight:
Constance 18 in shiny exotic with upgraded hardware trades at a premium over standard calf leather Constance productions due to combined allocation restriction across skin and hardware specifications. Very Good condition with intact lisse gloss, no scale lift at corners, and no H clasp scratching commands strong positioning at this grade. The Rose Gold finish does not patina or oxidize visibly with light use.
