The story behind the Birkin
Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.
Discover Hermès Birkin BagsThis exclusive design extends to other Hermès bags as well, including the Touch Kelly, Touch Picotin, and Touch Baton de Craie. These limited-edition bags are considered rare and highly sought after. The Touch Birkin is the most famous of these bags, characterized by accents of exotic leather, typically crocodile or alligator, on the flap, sangles, handles, and clochette. The rest of the bag is made from either Togo leather or Novillo leather. Shiny crocodile or alligator is generally paired with Togo leather, while matte variations complement Novillo leather. However, this is not a strict rule, as some bags feature the inverse combination.
The 25cm is the most compact option in the standard Birkin range, balanced silhouette. Interior is lined in matching Chevre leather with one zip pocket and one open pocket. Signature turn-lock closure, front flap, and sangles complete the hardware configuration.
Collector's Insight:
Matte Alligator production is constrained by raw material scarcity and limited annual output. Allocation within Hermès exotic bag production is among the most selective in the house.
Resale Insight:
The Birkin 25 is among the most consistently traded formats in the resale market. In a durable leather like Matte Alligator, it is built to be carried regularly rather than saved for occasions.
