The story behind the Birkin
Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.
Discover Hermès Birkin BagsThe fringe is built into the structure rather than applied as trim, the side panels laced and braided so the strands fall as a moving curtain down each side.
Sellier construction puts the stitching on the outside for crisp, top-stitched edges against the moving sides. Noir Evercolor carries a fine, even grain with a faint sheen, and palladium hardware keeps the whole bag in one cool, tonal field.
Collector's Insight:
Most Anate Fringe bags were made in Evergrain; this Noir example is in Evercolor, a less common variant of the same construction. As a special edition, the Anate sits outside the standard production cycle.
Resale Insight:
On a fringed Birkin, buyers check each strand for creasing and edge wear and the lacing at the gussets, since damaged fringe cannot be matched. The Sellier edges and corners are the other points they inspect.
