The story behind the Birkin
Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.
Discover Hermès Birkin BagsIt debuted on the Spring/Summer 2025 runway, with the body in Ficelle and Ecru Toile H canvas showing its raw edges and visible seams.
The flap, sangles, handles and base are Fauve Barenia Faubourg, the finer-grained version of the house's saddle leather, which darkens and takes on a patina with use. Because the construction is inverted, the bag has no interior pockets, and palladium hardware keeps a cool note against the canvas and tan leather.
Collector's Insight:
Hermès rarely alters the Birkin's underlying construction, and the À L'Envers does it openly, making the inside of the bag its subject. The canvas body in a Barenia Faubourg frame pairs the house's most durable textile with its saddlery leather.
Resale Insight:
Toile H is durable, but Barenia Faubourg marks and darkens readily, so buyers inspect the leather frame at the handles, corners and flap edge first. On an inverted bag, the exposed seams are the other point of wear.
