The story behind the Birkin

Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.

Birkin 25 in Natural Sable Togo with Gold hardware and contrast white stitching. Togo (Taurillon Clemence's close relative in the bull calfskin family) is a matte, pebbled-grain leather ; scratch-resistant, structurally resilient, and the most widely produced Birkin leather. It holds its shape at the 25 cm size without the rigidity of Epsom, developing a very slight softening over years of use without the pronounced slouch that Clemence develops. Natural Sable is a warm, medium-toned neutral ; deeper and more golden than Biscuit, lighter and warmer than Gold, without the gray undertone of Etoupe. It sits in the camel-to-honey range and reads as a true warm neutral in natural light.

Gold hardware with contrast white (écru) stitching. The white stitch against Natural Sable creates the classic Hermès "saddle" aesthetic ; the same tonal contrast used on the house's equestrian leather goods since the 19th century. Double rolled handles. Front flap with sangles, tournante closure, padlock, two keys, and clochette. Interior lined in Natural Sable Chèvre goatskin with one zip pocket and one flat pocket.

Collector's Insight:
Natural Sable was introduced around 2023–2024 and has quickly established itself as one of the most requested neutral tones in the current Hermès palette. It occupies a gap between Gold (which has been a permanent color for decades and leans slightly darker and more amber) and Biscuit (which is paler and cooler). The color's appeal is its versatility ; it functions as a warm neutral year-round without the seasonal limitations of darker browns or the maintenance concerns of lighter creams. Togo with Gold hardware and white stitching is the most classic Birkin specification Hermès produces; Natural Sable in this configuration reads as the definitive "everyday neutral Birkin" in the current color range. W stamp indicates 2024 production; early production of a color that is still in active rotation.

Resale Insight:
The Birkin 25 is the most in-demand Birkin size in current production, driven by the broader market shift toward smaller bags. Natural Sable in Togo with gold hardware combines the Birkin 25, the house's most widely used leather and a warm neutral, the classic daily configuration.
