The story behind the Birkin

Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.

Étoupe is the house's warm gray-taupe, darker than Gris Tourterelle and warmer than Étain. Swift's fine, smooth grain lets that warmth show with more depth than a structured leather like Togo or Epsom, which flattens the tone.

Swift is soft in the hand and saturates color vividly, though it shows marks and patina more readily with carry, and palladium hardware holds a cool contrast against the warm ground.

Collector's Insight:
Étoupe with palladium is one of the house's core neutral specifications, and in Swift it reads softer and richer than in the grained leathers.

Resale Insight:
Swift shows scratches and marks readily, so buyers check the corners, the front panel and the handles first.
