The story behind the Birkin
Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.
Discover Hermès Birkin BagsExotic ostrich at travel size: the largest standard Birkin dimension in a premium skin. Noisette is Hermès's hazelnut brown, warm, neutral, the kind of tan that works across seasons. Ostrich shows its characteristic quill pattern across the surface; the bumps where feathers were removed create texture no other leather replicates. Interior lined in Noisette Chèvre with slip and zip pockets.
Minimal wear to bottom rear corners, virtually undetectable. Palladium hardware cools the warm brown leather slightly.
Collector's Insight:
Exotic Birkin 40s are uncommon; most exotic production concentrates in 25, 30, and 35cm sizes. The 40cm format requires larger ostrich skins with consistent quill pattern across the expanded surface area. Noisette is a versatile neutral that shows the quill texture clearly without the maintenance concerns of lighter ostrich colors.
Resale Insight:
Birkin 40 in ostrich trades to collectors seeking travel capacity in exotic material, a narrow but specific segment. Excellent condition with minimal corner wear is expected for a bag this size that has seen use. The combination of format and material limits direct comparables.
