The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsThe original Teddy Kelly debuted Fall 2007: Barenia leather with Mouton shearling sides forming an open muff silhouette. Cozy, impractical, collectible. This example has been expertly modified: the sides closed to convert the muff into a functional clutch. The cream shearling now peeks from sealed seams rather than gaping open. A singular piece, the only Teddy Kelly Clutch in existence.
Barenia leather with contrast white stitching. Hermès's heritage smooth leather develops patina with age; the warm cognac tone deepens and marks become character. Palladium hardware cools the warm palette. Shearling interior visible at the edges adds texture and softness to the structured Kelly clutch format.
Collector's Insight:
The Teddy Kelly muffs from Gaultier's 2007 collection became instant collector pieces despite limited functionality. This modification preserves the design elements (Barenia, shearling, Kelly clutch silhouette) while creating actual usability. A runway archival piece made practical without losing its provenance.
Resale Insight:
One-of-one modifications to runway Hermès create singular objects outside standard market comparisons. The Teddy Kelly's original collector status combines with custom transformation; no comparable exists. Appeals to collectors seeking Gaultier-era Hermès with functional application.
