The story behind the Constance
In 1967, Jean-Louis Dumas asked a designer to create a bag for Hermès; she named it after her newborn daughter, Constance. A structured shoulder bag defined by its H clasp, which opens on a spring mechanism hidden at each side of the bar and serves as both closure and signature. Produced in Mini (18 cm), standard (24 cm) and Élan (approximately 25 cm); a Micro at approximately 14 cm has appeared in limited production runs.
Discover Hermès Constance BagsRouge Casaque is a vivid saturated red drawn from the Hermès equestrian palette, named after the silk jockey jacket worn at the racetrack. The color sits between Rouge Vif and Rouge H, brighter than the deep wine-tone reds, sharper than orange-leaning corals. On Evercolor the pigment carries with high consistency across the leather's pebbled grain, with the leather's water-resistant treatment locking color saturation tightly to the surface.
Hermès dates the Constance to 1967; its designer named it after her newborn daughter. The Mini 18 is the smallest Constance proportion in current production, with the H tournant clasp scaled to fit the compact body and a long shoulder strap that sets the model apart from the larger Constance 24. Gold hardware warms the saturated red into the foundational Rouge-and-Gold pairing across the Hermès catalog.
Collector's Insight:
The Constance is produced in materially smaller quantities than the Birkin or Kelly, and the Mini 18 is the most constrained size within the Constance range. Rouge Casaque is a cycling color rather than permanent palette and is not always available in current production. Evercolor with Gold on the Mini 18 is a configuration that recurs at retail unpredictably.
Resale Insight:
Constance Mini 18 has been one of the strongest-performing Hermès silhouettes on the secondary market over the past several years, with demand catching up to Kelly Pochette and Mini Kelly II tier as the secondary market has matured. Saturated reds in the Mini 18 trade faster than neutrals because the format is purchased primarily for evening and statement carry rather than daily rotation.
