The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.

Retourne construction gives the Kelly 35 soft, rounded edges, and palladium hardware keeps the black-and-white palette crisp. Inside, a pale blue lining adds a third color to a bag that reads black and white from the outside.
Collector's Insight:
Dalmatian was produced in limited runs in the 2000s and has not been reissued, and the white-ground version is its most graphic form.
Resale Insight:
White Buffalo Skipper shows soiling and color transfer, so buyers check the corners, handle and back panel first, and the spotting for any fading.
