The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsSmooth Box leather defines the flap, handle and side gussets, while pony-skin panels give the front and back a fine, directional pile. The all-black palette makes this a contrast of surfaces rather than colors: broad reflections across the leather and a softer sheen through the hair.
The Kelly's trapezoidal outline, single top handle and strap-and-turnlock closure keep the combination rooted in the model's classic form. The leather framing gives the hair-covered panels a defined outline without interrupting the black silhouette.

Pony-skin Kellys are a rare departure from the more familiar smooth and grained leather versions. Paired with classic Box leather, this example brings an unusual material combination to an otherwise traditional black Kelly.
