Rubis is the jewel red of the Hermès palette, a deep saturated berry with cool undertones that keep it clear of the orange warmth in Rouge Casaque and the brown depth in Rouge H. It occupies its own position in red collecting precisely because it refuses both directions.

Evergrain is the rarer half of the pairing. It is a fine, tightly grained calfskin with a matte surface and a soft hand, sitting between Togo's larger tumbled grain and Epsom's pressed texture, and Hermès has never carried it with the frequency of the standard three. On a saturated red the tight grain keeps the color even across the panel rather than pooling darker at the folds. Retourne construction turns the seams inward for rounded corners, which suits a leather this pliable. Palladium holds the red cool and true.

Collector's Insight: Two closed specifications meet on this bag. Evergrain was used sparingly and does not appear in current regular production alongside Togo, Epsom and Clemence, and Rubis was introduced around 2012 and retired within a few seasons. Neither can be reordered, so the surviving population is fixed at whatever was built during the overlap. The 28 is the classic Kelly proportion, bridging the compact 25 and the roomier 32, and it is the size most often described as the one that works for everything.

Resale Insight: Rubis in Evergrain is an uncommon pairing on the secondary market, and buyers looking for it are usually not cross-shopping other reds: the shade reads as a jewel tone rather than a classic red, which narrows the audience and sharpens it. That puts more weight on condition than a Noir or Gold Kelly would carry, since a retired color in a retired leather cannot be replaced with a newer example.
