The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsInternal stitching, softer edges, panels that relax rather than hold rigid geometry. The Kelly at its most approachable: structured enough to maintain shape, supple enough to soften with use.
Orange Dalmatian Buffalo Skipper with Gold hardware. Buffalo Skipper is a textured leather with natural grain variation; the Dalmatian treatment adds irregular orange spotting against a cream base, printed pattern over the leather's inherent texture. The effect reads as animal print without literal reference. This leather was a limited production; Hermès discontinued it years ago. Gold hardware warms the orange tones. Interior lined in Orange Chèvre with one zip pocket and two open pockets.
Collector's Insight:
Buffalo Skipper in Dalmatian pattern represents discontinued Hermès production: the leather and treatment haven't appeared in years. The spotted pattern on a Kelly is inherently unusual; most Kellys exist in solid colors. Collectors tracking rare leathers note these as specific-era pieces rather than ongoing production.
Resale Insight:
Discontinued leathers trade to collectors seeking materials no longer available at retail. The Dalmatian pattern narrows the buyer pool but commands interest from those specifically seeking unusual Kelly configurations. Excellent condition at twenty-plus years with full accessories indicates careful preservation.
