The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsThe two blues sit a half-step apart, so the contrast reads through texture rather than color, pebbled grain meeting scale relief in a single dark register. Palladium hardware holds the cool temperature throughout.
Retourne construction turns the panels during assembly for softer, rounded edges and a more relaxed profile than Sellier. The interior is lined in Chèvre with one zip and one slip pocket.
Collector's Insight:
Touch construction places exotic skin only on the handle and sangles, so the piece draws on exotic allocation while keeping calfskin at the high-contact panels. Bleu Nuit over Bleu Marine is a tonal pairing rather than a contrast one, read through texture instead of color.
Resale Insight:
Touch Kellys trade between standard-leather and full-exotic pricing, and dark tonal pairings narrow that gap because the partial construction is hardest to distinguish at a glance. The 28 remains the size most collectors carry rather than store.
