The story behind the Kelly

Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.

The body is rendered in Gold, the signature heritage tan of the brand, while the handle, sangles, and plaques are accented in Craie, a chalk-white tone that is cooler than Nata. This pairing creates a subtle "Spectator" aesthetic, referencing classic two-tone saddlery. The bag is constructed in the Sellier style using Epsom leather, a rigid, stamped-grain calfskin that holds the sharp, trapezoidal shape of the Kelly 25 better than any other leather.

A defining feature of this custom piece is the Brushed Gold Hardware (often referred to as Permabrass). Unlike the standard high-polish gold plating, Brushed Gold has a satin, matte finish that is significantly rarer and typically reserved for HSS orders. It offers a muted, modern warmth that diffuses light rather than reflecting it, complementing the matte texture of the Epsom leather. Produced in 2018 (Stamp C), this bag is a prime example of a wearable, collectible custom specification.

Collector's Insight:
Brushed Gold hardware is a specific point of interest for seasoned collectors. It is far less common than standard Gold or Palladium and is prized for its resistance to fingerprints and hairline scratches. Combining this hardware with a Gold/Craie neutral palette makes this bag a "Quiet Luxury" piece;distinctive to those who recognize the HSS stamp and hardware finish, but classically understated to the untrained eye. The Sellier construction in 25cm is currently the most requested Kelly configuration globally.

Resale Insight:
Special Order bags often face liquidity challenges if the color combinations are too personalized or eccentric. However, "Safe HSS" configurations like this;featuring core neutrals;are exceptions. They command a premium over standard production bags because they offer exclusivity without sacrificing wearability. The presence of Brushed Gold hardware further insulates the value, as it is a specification that cannot be found on the standard quota menu.
