The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsOn shiny alligator it reaches full intensity: the agate-polished scales throw light across the surface so the blue flares and deepens as the bag moves, the small even tiles of the alligator running in clean rows down the front panel and flap.
Sellier construction puts the stitching on the exterior for the crisp, structured edges of the formal Kelly, and at 20cm the scale pattern reads fine and contained. Gold hardware sets a warm contrast against the cool blue, and the interior is lined in matching Chèvre.
Collector's Insight:
The Mini Kelly 20 II in shiny alligator is among the most pursued exotic specifications Hermès makes: the most in-demand small format in the skin that shows color at its most dimensional. Bleu Électrique is a statement tone rather than a neutral, and exotic Minis draw the smallest allocation of the format, offered largely to established clients.
Resale Insight:
Exotic Mini Kellys sit at the top of the small-bag market, and saturated blues trade to a focused buyer pool not cross-shopping neutrals. A store-fresh, full-set example in the most in-demand size and a vivid exotic colorway sits at the upper end of available supply for the specification.
