The story behind the Birkin

Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.

This Birkin 35 sets a multicolor canvas body inside Ebene Box leather. The canvas runs in red, yellow and pale blue stripes on a dark ground; the Box, smooth with a glossy finish, takes the top band, flap, handles, sangles, gussets and corners.

Palladium hardware covers the turn-lock, the sangle plates and the padlock, and the clochette is in matching Ebene Box. Against the deep brown leather, the stripes read bold from the front and quiet from the side.

Box, Hermès' smooth calfskin with a glazed finish, gives the canvas a polished frame, so a familiar Birkin outline takes on a graphic, informal character.

Collector's Insight:
Box is a smooth calfskin with a glazed finish. With use it develops a soft patina and can show fine marks, which is how a carried Box piece is expected to age.

Resale Insight:
Buyers check the canvas for soiling at the corners and base, and the Box at the handles and corners for scratches and wear to the glaze.
