The story behind the Jige Élan

The elongated, rectangular version of the Jige, the envelope clutch Hermès has made since 1975. Closed by a leather tab pulled through an H cut into the flap, with no metal hardware. Made in 29 and 35 cm.

In Swift it reads at full strength. Swift is a smooth, fine-grained calfskin that takes dye with more saturation than the grained leathers, and on a flat, unbroken panel like the face of a Jige there is nothing to interrupt the color.

The Jige Elan is the elongated version of the Jige, a clutch with no hardware at all: the H-shaped tab slides through a leather loop, and that is the entire closure. The result is a piece defined by proportion and leather quality rather than by metal. The Elan proportion is longer and flatter than the standard Jige, cut to sit under the arm or in the hand without bulk.

Collector's Insight:
A dated example is worth more than an undated one to a collector building by era, and the A stamp places this in 2017, the year Blue Zanzibar entered the color program. Matching a seasonal color to its own production year is the kind of alignment that is easy to lose track of once a bag has changed hands, and it cannot be reconstructed later without the stamp.

Resale Insight:
Clutches move on color, not on model scarcity, because the Jige is a continuing design. Blue Zanzibar is the asset here: a blue with enough depth to work as an evening piece but enough saturation to avoid reading as navy. The buyer is typically someone who already owns Hermès and wants a hardware-free evening option, and they will pay for the color before they pay for the format.
