Hermès HAC Birkin 55 Toile & Rouge H Box with Gold Hardware

The Haut à Courroies is where the house's bag-making began: built at the start of the twentieth century to carry a saddle and riding boots, its tall body and high straps gave the model its name decades before the Birkin borrowed its architecture. What survives in the modern catalog as a special-order rarity was, in 1981, still a working travel piece.

This 55 is trunk scale, the largest HAC format, in natural toile with Rouge H Box calf trim and gold hardware. Box calf takes a deep shine and wears its four decades honestly, framing the canvas body in the house's classic travel pairing. Turn-lock closure, front flap, and sangles complete the configuration.

Collector's Insight: The HAC predates the Birkin by some eight decades and lends it its entire architecture; collectors of house history treat surviving examples as reference pieces. Trunk-scale 55s from the circle-stamp era surface rarely, and the toile-and-box pairing marks this one as original travel specification rather than a later fashion run.

Resale Insight: Vintage HACs trade on survival and character rather than seasonal demand, and large-format examples reach the secondary market far less often than the handbag sizes. Examples with original lock and strap in this state of preservation set their own comparables.
