Hermès HAC Birkin 40 Black Togo Palladium Hardware
Haut à Courroies means high straps, and the name is literal: the sangles run the full height of a bag designed in the 1890s to carry saddles and riding boots.

The story behind the HAC
Haut à Courroies: the direct ancestor of the Birkin, made to carry riding boots and a saddle. Hermès' own chronology dates it to around 1900 and credits Émile Hermès with its design. Proportions vary by size and era: a HAC 60 dated 2002 on record is wider than it is tall.
Discover Hermès Birkin HAC BagsThat job set the proportions, taller than wide over a deep base, and they were never revised. When the Birkin arrived in 1984 it took the same architecture and compressed it horizontally, which is the whole difference between the two silhouettes.
Togo's pebbled grain gives a bag this size the structure to stand on its own without the rigidity of a stiffer calfskin, and it absorbs contact rather than displaying it. At 40 cm the capacity is genuine rather than notional: a laptop, documents and a weekend's clothes sit inside without the bag distorting around them. Black with palladium fittings is the least decorative specification Hermès builds in this line, which is exactly why it reads as a working bag rather than a display piece.
Collector's Insight:
The HAC is the ancestor rather than the derivative, and choosing one over a Birkin is a statement about proportion and history. The 40 is where the silhouette stops being a gesture and starts being useful, which is also where secondary supply thins.
Resale Insight:
Black Togo is the specification buyers name first when they want a HAC they will genuinely carry, so demand concentrates here rather than spreading across colors. Condition and completeness do most of the work on price, because the configuration itself is the baseline everything else is measured against.
