Hermès Ghillies Birkin 40 Indigo Denim and Noir Evercalf Brushed Palladium Hardware

The Ghillies line took its name and its idea from the brogued Scottish ghillie shoe, and the Birkin was the shape Hermès chose to carry it. Every edge of the leather trim is punched and scalloped in the broguing pattern, the flap, the sangles, the corner caps and the base rail all cut and perforated by hand before assembly. The result is a Birkin with ornament built into its construction rather than laid on top of it.

This is the 40, and it pairs two materials the house rarely puts on one bag. The body is Indigo Denim, a dense woven cotton in a deep washed blue, and the trim is Noir Evercalf, a smooth matte calfskin with none of the sheen of Box or Tadelakt. Contrast stitching in a warm ochre runs every seam and every brogue line, which is what makes the perforation read from across a room. The hardware is brushed palladium rather than polished, so it sits quiet against the denim instead of flashing off it.

The Ghillies bags were positioned as unisex when they launched, and the 40 in denim and black is the one that most clearly earns that: it reads as a briefcase as easily as a handbag.

Collector's Insight: The Ghillies ran for a handful of seasons from 2012 and was not continued, and within the line the 40 is the least common size because the format was aimed at a narrower buyer than the 30 and 35. Denim bodies were made in smaller numbers than the all-leather Ghillies, and a denim 40 with brushed rather than polished palladium is a specification that surfaces very rarely.

Resale Insight: Ghillies Birkins trade as a named limited edition rather than against standard Birkin pricing, and the denim versions draw a distinct pool of buyers who want the line's most casual expression. Condition carries more weight on denim than on leather, since canvas cannot be refinished, and an Excellent example with the broguing crisp and the Evercalf unmarked is the form the bag is worth pursuing in.
