The story behind the Constance
In 1967, Jean-Louis Dumas asked a designer to create a bag for Hermès; she named it after her newborn daughter, Constance. A structured shoulder bag defined by its H clasp, which opens on a spring mechanism hidden at each side of the bar and serves as both closure and signature. Produced in Mini (18 cm), standard (24 cm) and Élan (approximately 25 cm); a Micro at approximately 14 cm has appeared in limited production runs.
Discover Hermès Constance BagsThe Micro is the smallest Constance format at approximately 14 cm, scaling the signature H clasp down to a proportion where the hardware occupies nearly the full height of the front flap. Lézard's fine, tightly packed scale pattern is well suited to this size, the small, uniform texture remains legible at miniature scale, whereas larger exotic skins with wider tiles can lose their pattern coherence on a bag this compact. The shiny black finish produces a lacquered surface across the fine grain.
Single flat shoulder strap. The oversized H clasp in polished gold provides the only contrast against the tonal black surface. N stamp. Excellent condition.
Collector's Insight:
The Constance is produced in significantly smaller quantities than the Birkin or Kelly, making it one of the more difficult Hermès bags to acquire at retail. The cm format is particularly scarce.
Resale Insight:
The Constance has emerged as one of the strongest performers in the Hermès resale market, with demand increasingly rivaling the Birkin and Kelly. The 18cm and 24cm sizes in classic colors maintain particularly strong positioning.
