The story behind the Constance
In 1967, Jean-Louis Dumas asked a designer to create a bag for Hermès; she named it after her newborn daughter, Constance. A structured shoulder bag defined by its H clasp, which opens on a spring mechanism hidden at each side of the bar and serves as both closure and signature. Produced in Mini (18 cm), standard (24 cm) and Élan (approximately 25 cm); a Micro at approximately 14 cm has appeared in limited production runs.
Discover Hermès Constance BagsHermès dates the Constance to 1967, when Jean-Louis Dumas asked a designer to create a bag; she named it after her newborn daughter, Constance. Having held sway among celebrities and style pioneers for more than five decades, this classic design is an emblem of enduring elegance. One standout feature of Hermès bags is the striking color palette, among which Bleu Electrique shines brightly. This vibrant hue, introduced by Hermès in 2017, has quickly grown popular among style enthusiasts for its electric and captivating aura. Frequently used to color Hermès' iconic bags, such as the Birkin, Kelly, and Constance, Bleu Electrique is known for its ability to command attention. Interestingly, the inspiration for this color comes from Hermès' own heritage - the electric blue seen on their iconic silk scarf aptly named "Bleu Electrique." With this color, Hermès once again proves its talent for capturing the essence of chic, elegance in each creation.
The Constance features Hermès' signature H-clasp closure, one of the most recognizable hardware elements in the house's vocabulary. Interior is lined in matching leather with a center divider, front slip pocket, and rear slot pocket. The crossbody strap is adjustable.
Collector's Insight:
The Constance is produced in significantly smaller quantities than the Birkin or Kelly, making it one of the more difficult Hermès bags to acquire at retail. The 24cm format is particularly scarce.
Resale Insight:
The Constance has emerged as one of the strongest performers in the Hermès resale market, with demand increasingly rivaling the Birkin and Kelly. The 18cm and 24cm sizes in classic colors maintain particularly strong positioning.
