The story behind the Constance
In 1967, Jean-Louis Dumas asked a designer to create a bag for Hermès; she named it after her newborn daughter, Constance. A structured shoulder bag defined by its H clasp, which opens on a spring mechanism hidden at each side of the bar and serves as both closure and signature. Produced in Mini (18 cm), standard (24 cm) and Élan (approximately 25 cm); a Micro at approximately 14 cm has appeared in limited production runs.
Discover Hermès Constance BagsBleu Brighton is the medium denim-blue Hermès produced cyclically through approximately 2017-2019, color code 7N, reading as a soft mid-tone blue with subtle gray-violet undertones distinct from deeper Bleu Saphir or paler Bleu Agate. On Evercolor the fine-grained pebbling holds the saturated pigment evenly, with the leather's lightweight hand suiting the Constance's flat profile. The H-clasp is the defining design element of the Constance, debuted in 1969 and unchanged since. Constance 24 is the larger of the two main Constance sizes, the everyday-format alternative to the more compact Constance 18.
Collector's Insight:
Constance is produced in meaningfully smaller quantities than Birkin or Kelly, with allocation requiring sustained boutique relationships. Bleu Brighton has cycled out of current production, positioning this in the discontinued-color tier where supply is fixed.
Resale Insight:
Constance has emerged as one of the strongest performers in the Hermès resale market, with demand increasingly rivaling Birkin and Kelly. Discontinued blues like Bleu Brighton hold structural demand from collectors building completed color subsections without the supply pressure of current-production neutrals.
