The story behind the Birkin
Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.
Discover Hermès Birkin BagsThis Birkin 40 pairs Bleu Nuit Togo on the exterior with Orange Poppy Chèvre interior and matching contour piping that traces every external seam, making the secondary color visible at the bag's structural edges. Bleu Nuit is the deepest navy Hermès produces, color code 7K, with subtle violet undertones distinct from Bleu Saphir or Bleu Encre. Orange Poppy is the saturated red-orange in the cyclical palette, color code 8M. Brushed Gold is the matte brushed-finish gold hardware accessible only through HSS, less reflective than polished Gold and tonally aligned with the configuration's restrained metallic register. D ⊃⊂ stamp places production at 2019 with horseshoe markers confirming HSS provenance.
Collector's Insight:
HSS Birkin 40 with contour piping is among the most graphically distinctive HSS specifications, since piping requires custom atelier execution at every external seam. Brushed Gold further narrows the configuration, available only through the HSS hardware menu rather than standard catalog.
Resale Insight:
HSS Birkins trade at meaningful premiums because the horseshoe stamp itself is the value driver. Triple-spec configurations combining HSS bicolor, contour piping, and Brushed hardware target the most established collector base, with comparable supply consistently below interest.
