Hermès Birkin 35 Vert Fonce Feutre Wool & Vert Anglais Swift Palladium Hardware
Hermès Birkin 35 Vert Fonce Feutre Wool & Vert Anglais Swift Palladium Hardware
Feutre is wool felt, the workshop material of hat blocks and saddle pads, and in 2019 Hermès did something it had never done before: it built a Birkin out of it. The house had worked felt in accessories and objects over the years, but never on its defining bag, and the effect is a Birkin that reads as sculpture in cloth: the deep Vert Foncé felt holds the bag's full architecture while absorbing light completely, matte in a way no leather achieves. The material also strips weight from the 35 format, turning the largest standard Birkin into one of the lightest.
Everywhere the bag works for a living, Hermès returned to leather: Vert Anglais Swift carries the handles, sangles, flap trim, and hardware points, a second green set deliberately against the first. The two-tone-on-two-material composition is the piece's signature, saddlery framing textile, and Palladium hardware keeps the whole palette cool and forestal. The 35 is one of the two original 1984 Birkin proportions, and the felt construction gives that familiar scale an entirely unfamiliar presence.

Collector's Insight: Non-leather Birkins form one of the smallest classes in the entire Hermès catalog, and the Feutre stands in it as the first Birkin the house ever executed in felt. Material-first editions like this trade in the same collecting lane as the woven and wood pieces: the draw is the construction event itself, produced for a single season and never repeated, so the examples made during that window are the entire supply.
Resale Insight: Felt raises the stakes on condition in a way leather does not: wool cannot be refinished, re-dyed, or corner-repaired, so a pristine example holds a wider premium over worn ones than any calfskin Birkin would. The buyer pool is collectors who chase material rarity over configuration math, and with a full set and an untouched surface, this example is the form in which the edition is worth owning.
