The story behind the Birkin
Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.
Discover Hermès Birkin BagsIt is rendered here in Porosus Crocodile, the premier exotic skin identified by the caret symbol (^), sourced from saltwater crocodiles in the brackish waters of Australia and Southeast Asia and celebrated for its microscopic pores and symmetrical scale pattern. The Lisse, or shiny, finish is achieved not by glazing but by rigorously buffing the leather with an agate stone until it develops a glass-like sheen.
The 35cm silhouette is the original Birkin size, designed for travel and daily utility. Accented with warm Gold hardware, the combination feels regal and historically significant: the hardware acts as jewelry against the deep, glossy scales. This piece arrives with all original accessories, preserved in pristine condition.
Collector's Insight:
Rouge H in Porosus Crocodile is arguably the most traditional and prestigious configuration available, the house's signature color on its most valuable skin. On shiny Porosus the color reads nearly black until light moves across it, which is exactly the discretion the pairing is collected for.
Resale Insight:
The market for Rouge H exotics is among the most stable in the category, insulated from the cycles that move pop colors. Demand skews toward collectors who value presence and utility, and full-set pristine examples are the scarcest tier of that supply.
