The story behind the Birkin

Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.

Discover Hermès Birkin Bags

Epsom is the leather that holds a Birkin at attention. Its embossed crosshatch gives it a rigidity Togo does not have: corners stay square, the flap sits flat and the silhouette holds whether the bag is full or empty.

It also resists water and scratches better than the softer calfskins. In Noir the structure reads crisp and graphic rather than matte and relaxed, and gold hardware warms the black.

Collector's Insight:
Noir Epsom with gold suits those who want a Birkin to keep its shape over years of use, where a softer calfskin would relax.

Resale Insight:
Epsom's structure is its strength, so buyers check the corners, where rigid leather can crack or rub, and the handles.
