The story behind the Birkin
Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.
Discover Hermès Birkin BagsFirst, it was produced by special order, which means that it was not a standard item in Hermès' regular product line. Special order items are typically made to the specific requests of a customer, and they are not generally available for purchase by the general public. Second, the bag was produced prior to the introduction of the iconic horse-shoe stamp, which further adds to its uniqueness. This stamp is now a well-known feature of Hermès bags, and its absence on this particular bag makes it a rare and collectible item. The bag is also made of black Togo leather, which is a high-quality, durable leather with a unique grain pattern. The combination of this leather with the Orange H Chèvre lining and Palladium hardware makes for a striking and eye-catching design.
The 30cm is the balanced silhouette valued for its capacity as a functional day bag. Interior is lined in matching Chevre leather with one zip pocket and one open pocket. Signature turn-lock closure, front flap, and sangles complete the hardware configuration.
Collector's Insight:
The Birkin 30 in Black Orange H Togo represents the core of the Hermès handbag program. Production quantities are not disclosed by the house, and retail acquisition requires an established purchase history with a Hermès boutique.
Resale Insight:
The Birkin 30 is among the most consistently traded formats in the resale market. In a durable leather like Togo, it is built to be carried regularly rather than saved for occasions.
