The story behind the Birkin

Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.

Discover Hermès Birkin Bags

Sellier construction moves the Birkin's saddle stitching to the outside, trading the standard Birkin's softer, rounded Retourne corners for sharp edges and visible topstitching.

Gold, the house's warm cognac-tan, sits well on Epsom, whose pressed grain holds the Sellier's crisp lines and resists scratches. Gold hardware keeps the whole bag tonal.

Collector's Insight:
Sellier Birkins are made in smaller numbers than the standard Retourne version, and Gold Epsom with gold hardware gives the sharper construction a classic, tonal palette.

Resale Insight:
Epsom holds its shape and resists scratches, so buyers look at the corners, where Sellier edges take knocks first, and at the handles.
