The story behind the Birkin
Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.
Discover Hermès Birkin BagsThe Picnic line began with the Kelly, shown in the Spring/Summer 2011 collection, its body woven from osier, the willow used in traditional French basketry, and framed and trimmed in leather. Hermès extended the treatment across the following decade to the Garden Party, the Bolide and a miniaturized Kelly, and the Birkin joined the family in 2021.
The contrast is the design argument: pale hand woven willow against Rouge Swift, rustic material and formal architecture holding each other in tension. Swift is the smooth, fine grained calfskin Hermès uses when it wants color to read at full intensity, and here it carries the flap, sangles, handles and base corners where the structure needs leather rather than weave.
The interior is lined in Chèvre with one zip pocket and one open pocket, and the turn lock, front flap and sangles complete the configuration. Woven willow cannot be refinished the way leather can, so it asks for dry storage and gentle handling.
Collector's Insight:
Picnic pieces come out of a narrow specialist lane, since the willow work requires basketry skills the leather ateliers do not perform, and they surface in small seasonal runs rather than standing production. The Birkin arrived last in the family, and the 25 is its smallest format.
Resale Insight:
Supply is fixed by the size of each production run, and Picnic Birkins draw the collector building a materials focused shelf rather than the buyer replacing a daily bag.
