The story behind the Birkin
Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.
Discover Hermès Birkin BagsOmbré lizard is not dyed: the gradient is the skin's own coloring, running from the darker scales along the spine through the flanks to the pale belly, preserved through tanning. The effect depends on hide selection, and this piece shows a long, clean pale belly field with smooth transitions and no abrupt breaks.
Salvator lizard has larger scales than niloticus, which gives the gradient more definition across the Birkin's front. At 25 cm the Birkin is compact enough for evening, and palladium hardware stays cool against the gray-and-cream tones.
Collector's Insight:
Ombré is judged hide by hide. Collectors look for a wide white belly field, minimal yellowing in the lighter scales and a gradient without abrupt breaks, the three qualities that separate one example from the next.
Resale Insight:
Lighter scales are where lizard ages first, so buyers look for yellowing in the pale sections before anything else. On a Birkin, the corners and the handle bases are the other points of wear.
