The story behind the Birkin
Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.
Discover Hermès Birkin BagsIts scales are small and densely packed, so a finished panel reads as a fine, even texture rather than as a grid of tiles, and the shiny finish turns that texture into a continuous shimmer across the surface. In Noir the effect is at its most concentrated, since nothing competes with it.
Hide size is the constraint. A monitor lizard yields far less usable skin than a crocodile, which is why lizard appears mostly on the smaller formats. Sellier construction suits it: rigid panels and external stitching hold the fine scale run flat and square, where a soft build would let it fold out of register. Gold hardware, the turn-lock, padlock and clochette, stands out against the black skin.
Collector's Insight:
Lizard occupies its own lane inside the exotic program, distinct from crocodile and alligator in both scale and supply. Usable hides are small, so the material appears mostly on the smaller formats. A Birkin 20 in Noir lizard pairs one of the smallest Birkin formats with an exotic whose supply is limited by hide size.
Resale Insight:
Lizard trades as its own market, apart from crocodile and alligator. Noir removes the color variable, so an example is measured largely on the evenness of its scale run.
