An Ode to the Vintage Hermès Kelly 20 Shoulder
The attached shoulder strap, compact proportions and distinctive hardware of an archival Kelly, with a closer look at the contemporary En Désordre
The vintage Kelly 20 shoulder occupies a distinct place in the Hermès archive. Its attached strap changes both the silhouette and the way this small Kelly is carried. The interest begins with that construction: a compact body suspended from its own shoulder strap, with the familiar flap and turn-lock kept in proportion. Looking closely at it also offers a useful comparison with the Kelly En Désordre, introduced on the Autumn–Winter 2022 runway.
The original shoulder configuration
Sotheby's dates the earliest known Mini Kelly to 1957, with a mid-length shoulder strap. The bracelet-handle version appeared in 1980, more than two decades later. On the vintage shoulder model, the strap itself provides the carrying handle, attached through distinctive metal fittings. Its length allows the bag to sit over the shoulder, on the arm or in the hand. That arrangement deserves to be understood as a design in its own right.
Vintage Kelly 20s appear with different strap lengths and in a broad range of materials, including smooth leather, suede, lizard, crocodile and combinations of textile and leather. For this article, the defining feature is the shoulder construction. The examples below show the attached strap and its fittings clearly, keeping that distinction visible as the material changes.
A contemporary comparison: the Kelly En Désordre
Hermès' Fall 2022 runway show introduced new En Désordre interpretations of the Birkin, Kelly, and Bolide. The term en désordre, meaning "in disorder", had been used previously for a rearranged interpretation of the Brides de Gala scarf pattern; applied to bags, it describes a deliberate scrambling of the standard design elements. Handles attach at different heights. Pockets and flaps appear to float independently around the bag's surface. The arrangement reads playful but the construction is precise.
The En Désordre also uses a fixed shoulder strap, recalling the carrying arrangement of the vintage Kelly 20 shoulder. Its offset panels take the comparison in a different direction: one closure opens to the main compartment, while the other serves an exterior pocket. The strap attachments and asymmetric body distinguish the two designs. Sotheby's describes the En Désordre as a modern interpretation of the vintage shoulder Kelly.
Why the vintage shoulder Kelly matters: The attached strap gives the Kelly 20 a particular line and a particular way of being carried. The later En Désordre makes that older arrangement newly interesting to examine, while the vintage examples retain their own clear, balanced construction. The appeal is in the object itself: the scale, the strap, the fittings and the way they work together.
Identifying an example in the archive
Record the attached strap's drop, the bag's width, height and depth, and the construction of the strap fittings. A 20cm designation does not establish one universal carrying length. Side and rear photographs should show whether the body is aligned in the vintage manner or deliberately offset in the En Désordre.
On a vintage shoulder Kelly, inspect the full strap, its connection to the hardware, the edges and the points where the leather bends. On an En Désordre, request both faces open so the main compartment and exterior pocket are clearly distinguished. The date stamp supports the chronology, but construction, condition and provenance must be assessed together.
