The story behind the Kelly

Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.

A raised waffle grid runs across the body and flap, while the handle, sangles and shoulder strap stay smooth. The texture sits on the surface and leaves the Kelly's outline as crisp as a smooth-leather example.

Sellier construction stitches the seams on the outside, with no exterior piping, which gives sharper corners and a boxier, more structured stance than the Retourne. Beeswax applied to the edges protects them. The method takes more steps than Retourne, and a Sellier reads slightly larger than a Retourne of the same size. The bag carries by its single top handle or on the detachable shoulder strap.

Collector's Insight:
The Kelly descends from the sac à dépêches of the 1930s and took its name in 1956. Sellier is made in smaller numbers than Retourne, and the waffle grid sets this example apart from the smooth and grained leathers used on most Kellys.

Resale Insight:
Buyers set a waffle Kelly against smooth-leather Kelly 32s, and the texture is the reason to choose it. Condition is read at the raised ridges and corners, where a textured surface shows handling first.
