The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsRouge Tomate Epsom with Palladium hardware. Rouge Tomate is Hermès's tomato red;bright, saturated, warmer than Rouge Casaque but cooler than Orange. It sits in the true red register without veering burgundy or coral. Epsom's pressed grain holds the color consistently and reinforces Sellier's rigid geometry. Palladium hardware cools the warm red, creating crisp contrast.
Collector's Insight:
Rouge Tomate has developed a following among Hermès collectors for its balance;red enough to make a statement, not so dark it reads as burgundy. Epsom at this scale maintains structure without adding weight. The 2020 production date places this pre-pandemic; pristine condition five years later indicates unworn storage.
Resale Insight:
Mini Kelly IIs in saturated colors trade to collectors seeking impact at compact scale. Rouge Tomate with Palladium hardware appeals to those wanting cool-toned metal against warm leather. Store-fresh condition with full set supports strong positioning.
