Hermès Birkin 40 "Grizzly" Bleu Thalassa Veau Doblis Suede & Permabrass Hardware
Hermès Birkin 40 "Grizzly" Bleu Thalassa Veau Doblis Suede & Permabrass Hardware
The Hermès Birkin 40 "Grizzly" in Bleu Thalassa Veau Doblis with Permabrass Hardware is one of the rarest Birkin variations. The Grizzly line (produced primarily 2011-2013) reverses the typical leather construction: the body is suede (Veau Doblis) while the handles, straps, and structural elements are Swift leather. Bleu Thalassa is a deep teal-blue that looks darker in suede form due to the matte texture. The suede absorbs rather than reflects light, creating depth.
Permabrass hardware is what Hermès calls "Champagne Gold", a pale gold tone that sits between standard Gold and Palladium. It was produced for a limited period and is significantly rarer than standard hardware finishes. The 40cm Birkin is travel-bag sized, the largest standard Birkin format, and was produced in far smaller quantities than 30cm or 35cm, particularly in specialty constructions like Grizzly.

Collector's Insight:
Grizzly Birkins were limited releases and the 40cm size is exceptionally rare: most Grizzlys produced were 30cm or 35cm. Suede requires more careful handling than standard leathers (water damage, staining) but develops character over time. The combination of Grizzly construction, 40cm size, and Permabrass hardware makes this one of the most specific Birkin configurations. Bleu Thalassa in suede is darker and richer than the standard leather version of this color.
Resale Insight:
Suede Hermès bags appeal to a niche collector base: less practical than standard leathers but significantly rarer. The 40cm Birkin has seen renewed interest as oversized bags trend upward. Grizzly models trade at premiums when they appear, which is infrequent, and Permabrass hardware adds another scarcity layer. This configuration targets advanced collectors rather than first-time buyers, and pricing reflects rarity rather than broad market demand.
