Hermès Birkin 35 Vert Anglais Box Calf Gold Hardware

Vert Anglais is Hermès' deep English-hunter green, a color that reads nearly black in low light and resolves its green undertone only under direct illumination.

The story behind the Birkin

Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.

In some circles the shade is referred to as British Racing Green, usually an automotive designation, but the association is apt: the same deep, tradition-laden green that carried a century of racing marques, translated into leather. It is among the most frequently misidentified colors in the catalogue; photographed, it passes for Noir, and in person the green sits at the edge of perception, most pronounced where light meets the leather directly.

On Box Calf the color reaches full depth: the smooth aniline surface takes dye with a saturation no grained leather can reproduce, and develops the semi-gloss patina that defines aged Box. Gold hardware warms the cool depth of the green and is the pairing Hermès has favored on Box throughout its production. An F square stamp places this example in 2002, within the period when Box Calf was still worked in the larger formats before the house narrowed the leather to a fraction of its earlier output.

The 35 is the working Birkin: the size that carries a day's contents without reading as luggage, and the format Jane Birkin herself favored.

Collector's Insight:
Three closed variables converge on this piece: Box Calf at a scale Hermès rarely works it now, a dark green produced in short intermittent runs rather than as a standing palette color, and the 35 format, which the house allocates in far lower volume than the 25 or 30. None of the three refreshes through new production, which fixes the surviving population permanently. Vert Anglais on Box is the connoisseur's dark green, the documented alternative to Noir for buyers who want depth without the obvious choice.

Resale Insight:
Dark greens hold steady secondary interest as documented alternatives to the standard neutrals, with limited live comparables in any given year. Box Calf at 35cm trades on provenance and condition rather than seasonal demand, which insulates it from the color cycles that move current-production leathers. Square-stamp Box in a large format now surfaces principally through estate dispositions and long-held private collections rather than active trading.
