The story behind the HAC
Haut à Courroies: the direct ancestor of the Birkin, made to carry riding boots and a saddle. Hermès' own chronology dates it to around 1900 and credits Émile Hermès with its design. Proportions vary by size and era: a HAC 60 dated 2002 on record is wider than it is tall.
Discover Hermès Birkin HAC BagsKnown as 'the original Birkin' HAC Birkins have been around for almost 100 years. Originally intended to carry a saddle, these bags are now loved for their roomy interiors and sturdy handles making them ideal companions for travel. This example is done in rich Blue Marine Matte Porosus Crocodile. Maintained in excellent condition, it stands out even from other HACs with its deeply saturated color. No other travel bag in the world is as coveted as this handcrafted Hermès Birkin HAC bag.
The 40cm is the larger proportioned silhouette. Interior is lined in matching Chevre leather with one zip pocket and one open pocket. Signature turn-lock closure, front flap, and sangles complete the hardware configuration.
Collector's Insight:
Matte Porosus Crocodile production is constrained by raw material scarcity and limited annual output. Allocation within Hermès exotic bag production is among the most selective in the house.
Resale Insight:
Exotic travel HACs reach the secondary market only a handful of times per year globally. Pricing is set by scarcity rather than comparables, and matte crocodile at this scale is among the rarest expressions of the format.
