The story behind the Birkin
Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.
Discover Hermès Birkin BagsBlack matte Porosus is the reference exotic: the configuration collectors mean when they say a crocodile Birkin. The wool-buffed matte finish absorbs light across the small, symmetrical scales rather than reflecting it, and at 40 the archetype reads at full scale, with gold hardware warming the black.
Interior is lined in matching Chevre leather with one zip pocket and one open pocket. Signature turn-lock closure, front flap, and sangles complete the configuration.
Collector's Insight:
Matte finish is allocated less frequently than shiny within Porosus production, since the unglazed surface conceals nothing and demands flawless hides. The 40 in black matte is the archetype collectors return to after the statement colors.
Resale Insight:
Black exotic Birkins hold the broadest and most stable demand of any exotic color, and the vault currently holds this configuration in both gold and palladium, a side-by-side comparison almost no one gets to make in person.
