The story behind the Birkin

Originated in 1984 from a conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès Executive Chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; its structural lineage traces to the Haut à Courroies. Familiar sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm, alongside miniature, shoulder and travel versions, in both Retourné and Sellier construction.

Birkin 35 Ghillies Grand Marriage combining three exotic skins: Poussière Matte Alligator body, Tabac Camel Ostrich on the Ghillies trim and flap detailing, and Sesame Lizard on the handles and sangles. The brogue-style serrated edging defines the Ghillies design, adapted from traditional Scottish footwear. Each skin reads differently at this scale: matte alligator provides a flat, tonal base; ostrich adds quill-follicle texture on the trim panels; lizard introduces a fine, glossy contrast on the handles. Permabrass hardware complements the neutral palette.

Collector's Insight:
The Grand Marriage is the tri-exotic iteration of the Ghillies line, produced in only four colorways across Birkin and Kelly formats. Poussière/Tabac Camel/Sesame was the first neutral colorway released. Fewer than 18 Grand Marriage pieces have appeared at auction since production.

Resale Insight:
Grand Marriage Ghillies trade as standalone collectibles independent of standard Birkin 35 pricing trends. Tri-exotic construction with Permabrass hardware in pristine condition with full set represents the top tier of the Ghillies market.
