The story behind the Kelly
Created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas as a women's bag with straps: a trapezoid with two triangular gussets, a cutout flap, a handle and two side straps. It took the Kelly name in 1956, when Grace Kelly made it famous. Sellier construction keeps the seams on the outside for a more defined outline; Retourné construction turns them inside for softer edges. The leather does not decide the construction: Box calf Kellys are recorded in both.
Discover Hermès Kelly BagsThe debut of the Mini Kelly II sparked an extraordinary wave of demand that shows no signs of slowing down, even years later. Hermès has masterfully maintained its allure by keeping production of these highly sought-after 20cm Sellier Kelly bags exceptionally limited. Each season, they release only a select few, with the palette of colors constantly evolving to captivate collectors and enthusiasts alike.
This store-fresh example is crafted in the Blue Royal Matte Alligator, an exotic leather prized for its luxurious texture and rich, vibrant hue. Its rarity and impeccable craftsmanship make it a true, embodying the unmatched artistry and exclusivity for which Hermès is celebrated.
Collector's Insight:
Matte Alligator production is constrained by raw material scarcity and limited annual output. Allocation within Hermès exotic bag production is among the most selective in the house.
Resale Insight:
The market demand for Kelly bags, particularly in the 20cm size, continues to outpace supply. This specific configuration is a staple for collectors seeking a balance of heritage and contemporary style.
