The Hermès Birkin 35 "Grand Mariage" is a pinnacle of limited-edition collecting, representing the union of the maison's three most precious exotic materials in a single, masterful silhouette. Designed by Pierre Hardy, this bag features the intricate "Ghillies" broguing, serrated trim inspired by Scottish dress shoes, applied to a complex patchwork of skins. The body is crafted from Matte Niloticus Crocodile in Gris Elephant, a deep, rich grey with subtle brown undertones that anchors the palette.
The decorative Ghillies trim (top flap, bottom corners) is executed in Etrusque Ostrich, adding a dotted, textural contrast in a warm terracotta hue. The structural elements, the rolled handles and sangles, are rendered in Ficelle Lizard, a neutral beige reptile skin known for its precise, small scales. This Tri-Exotic composition is accented with Permabrass Hardware, a rare champagne-gold finish that harmonizes the cool grey body with the warm earth-tone accents.

Collector's Insight:
The Grand Mariage is one of the few instances where Hermès mixes three distinct exotic species on a single bag. The technical difficulty of applying the serrated Ghillies cut to Ostrich skin without compromising the quill pattern is immense. Consequently, production numbers were extremely low (circa 2013–2014). It is a defining piece for collectors who value technical mastery and complex material stories.
Resale Insight:
Tri-Exotic bags occupy the highest tier of the exotic market, sitting just below the Himalaya in terms of prestige. Because they combine three different species, cross-border trade involves additional complexity, which makes domestic examples in pristine condition especially sought after.
