Recently, Chanel’s traditional tweeds and tailored suits made way for vibrant streetwear pieces with the unveiling of the fashion house’s collaboration with music mogul Pharrell Williams. The unisex capsule collection takes on an urban edge influenced by Williams’ background in hip-hop, art, and design. The partnership makes perfect sense as the the multi-talented artist has developed a close relationship with the brand and former Creative Director Karl Lagerfeld. Over the years, Williams has starred in history-making Chanel campaigns, visited the Paris atelier, walked its runway, and even wrote a song for the fashion house.
For Williams, Chanel has always been something to aspire to. Before he began repping the brand himself, he would customize his own sneakers by drawing the iconic interlocking "C" logo on them. As his relationship with Chanel developed, Williams' own creative identity has brought an energy and zest to Chanel, honoring its legacy while exemplifying its ability to evolve. This aspect of the fashion house is something that Williams touches on in a behind-the-scenes video for the fashion film that was released ahead of the capsule collection. "Gabrielle Coco Chanel didn’t see partitions and it’s interesting because neither did the brand when it came to giving me a shot," Williams says in the video. "There doesn’t need to be boundaries as long as you can hold on to the heritage and continue to push it, like Karl always does."
The Chanel Pharrell collection – a moniker coined by Lagerfeld before his passing in February – debuted at the opening of Chanel’s Seoul flagship boutique on March 29, 2019 with a celebration followed by an exclusive concert featuring Blackpink’s Jennie Kim, DJ sets by model Soo Joo Park and Anna Kim, and a performance by Williams himself.
